After a delicious dinner, a great visit and a good night's sleep at a hotel, we headed back towards home. On the way we got a wild hair about the idea of stopping at the Winchester Mystery House. Shockingly, the kids loved the sound of it and insisted we go. This NEVER happens. We are forever trying to talk them into doing ANYthing outside of the house!
So we dropped in at Winchester and did the tour. The history of the house is a unique one -- read about it here. After the tour inside that completely intrigued the children, we walked around the grounds where they had fun exploring the gardens and additional buildings. It was genuinely nice to see them enjoying something outside of their comfort zone. I hope this becomes a trend.
That really is a door that Sarah Winchester had built. Amongst other oddities, there is a staircase that just goes up to the ceiling, a room with one entrance and three exits, a window in the floor and a shower that only works for someone who is four feet ten inches tall -- the height of Sarah Winchester.
The kids were also happy to partake of some goods at the gift shop.
And so begins Twenty-Ten. It's not going to be an easy year, but I have hope that it will be better than the last one.

What a neat side trip! I haven't been there in ages! Here's to 2010!
That's quite an interesting house! Happy New Year! Here's to a FABULOUS 2010!!
Love, Mere
We went there this past year and it was a blast! I lived up near there the first 7 years of my life, then was up in that general area for 13 and NEVER managed to go there until I moved down south!
I hope your awkwardness is over and you can enjoy 2010. Great pic of you and the little miss!
I think I remember seeing a story on that house on the travel channel one time--very cool!
